Binliner Dresses

This is one of my experimental dresses for my A2 Textiles & Design Externally Set Assignment. The theme of our exam was to create a dress, however only using an unconventional material. I began looking to the female form, shape and styles. I then looked in to designers such as, Alexandra McQueen and Vivinenne Westwood. Also while developing my research discovered an amazing textiles artist, her being Kim Thittichai. Kim published a book titled 'Hot Textiles'. This was my main inspiration, when it come to the idea of thinking about the materials and how I could make them more then just what they were.

I began experimenting with Bin Liners. This is a cheap and easy material to work with.

I used a number of different materials and tools to create patterns and surfaces.

This was the starting point to creating my final dress.
I melted bin liners to a basic petticoat, which created a volumed structure that I could work with.

This is an image of my corset. I took a basic plain black corset and burnt away the panels and replaced them with bin liner panels. I have also taken inspiration from 'Victorian Fashion' and the overall idea of the female form. The thin waist and the wide hips. I feel this dress captures these aspects.
